Andy Butler, one of the Directors at Wabsys, has recently completed an incredible cycling challenge, covering 332 miles across the beautiful, yet demanding landscape of Tuscany, to raise money for Rugby League Cares, an independent charity that supports and improves the lives of people involved in rugby league at every level.
Joining a team of fellow cyclists, Andy took part in a challenging five-day route through the heart of Tuscany. Setting off from Pisa on Sunday 8th June, the riders tackled steep climbs, stunning scenery, soaring temperatures and more than a few unexpected punctures along the way.
Over the course of the challenge, Andy cycled a total of 332 miles (534km) and climbed more than 26,800 feet (8,180 metres) in elevation.
The route included:
Day 1 – Pisa to Florence: 72 miles (117km) with 4,400ft (1,350m) of elevation
Day 2 – Florence to Arezzo: 62.5 miles (97km) with 5,930ft (1,810m) of elevation
Day 3 – Arezzo to San Quirico d’Orcia: 63.5 miles (102km) with 6,360ft (1,930m) of elevation
Day 4 – San Quirico d’Orcia to San Gimignano: 63.8 miles (102km) with 4,770ft (1,450m) of elevation
Day 5 – San Gimignano to Pisa: 70.6 miles (114km) with 5,375ft (1,640m) of elevation
While the scenery was breathtaking, the challenge was far from easy.
“There were a few punctures on the first day and throughout the week, which certainly kept things interesting,” Andy said. “Some of the terrain was quite testing at times, but the incredible views made it worthwhile. Knowing we were raising money for such a fantastic cause also helped keep us motivated when the going got tough.”
One of Andy’s highlights was visiting the famous Piazza del Campo in Siena.
“The square at Siena was definitely a standout moment for me. It’s an amazing place and something I’ll always remember.”
After five days in the saddle, the group returned to Pisa having completed a full loop of Tuscany.
“It was hot, challenging and a lot of fun. We had a fantastic group of people both on and off the bikes, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable.”
The team at Wabsys are proud of Andy for completing such an impressive achievement and his contribution to raising more than £30,000 for the Seriously Injured Players Fund.
